We are Moving to Cancun

It is somewhat official now: Gretchen and I are relocating to Cancún.  Gretchen will still be doing her same job there, just more focused on the Caribbean side of things.  I'll be doing my same stuff too, just on the beach.  I've already had a little practice, as the picture indicates.

The plan is for both of us to fly down the last week of May to spend a long weekend looking for a house.  I'll then fly back early the first week of June to let the movers do their thing, close up shop, and then fly back out for the last time at the end of the week.

It's going to be quite a change from life here in jolly old Mexico City; some good (less dense), some bad (hot!) and some unknown.  That's ok, as we are excited about the new experiences.

We have some friends who have already made the move from D.F. to Cancún as part of the great tourism industry migration, so we are looking forward to reconnecting with them.  At the same time, we will miss our great friends here in the city.  So, here's to seeing each other soon!

Hey,
Just read your blog and thought I would drop you a line. My wife and I are considering a move to Cancun. We currently live in Canada, however my wife is Mexican with a large family in Cancun so this is why Cancun is our choice.

What will you be doing (other than sunbathing) in the city? What does your wife do if you don't mind me asking? Where are you originally from?

Hey Michael,

Thanks for the comment. We are moving for Gretchen's work; she does marketing for a hotel company and is getting transferred. I do web development, and work from home, wherever it may be. We are both originally from the US.

Best of luck if you decide to move. Keep me posted.

Just read your blog and thought I'd ask you a few questions. I'm 34 years old and have a bachelors degree in bussiness. I'm an American Citizen who ran my own construction company in Texas for 9 years until the recent financial crisis and subsequent housing meltdown put me out of business. I was able to obtain Mexican citizenship because both of my parents were born there so I now have dual citizenship. I am single and have no kids so I've decided to move to Cancun and work there in the tourism industry. I was a leasing agent during college and sold homes afterwards before launching my construction company. I heard you don't need a realtors licence in Mexico and hope my sales background can help me get a sales position. I'm pretty versatile and am open to anything along these lines. I plan to move in early September and any advice or job recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Edgar,

I don't know what the laws are regarding realtor licensing for home sales or leasing, but I can say that from our own experience with working with realtors for leasing a house, that it is quite a different experience to rent here vs. in the US. I've been meaning to do another blog post about the experience, but in short, we would have been well served to have a realtor with experience in both US and MX markets, so they could educate us on some things that are different, and also to know that expectations may be different for an expat as far as what will be included in rent, what condition the house should be in, etc.

There are people coming and going in Cancun all the time, including expats, so it might be worth investigating to see if you might have an opportunity to get in that market, given your experience in the US. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.
